The Alfie Treasury Shirley Hughes 9780370332444 Books
This lovely treasury contains the following Alfie Stories: Alfie Gets in First, Alfie's Feet, Alfie Gives a Hand, An Evening at Alfie's, Alfie & the Birthday Surprise, Alfie Wins a Prize, Alfie and the Big Boys. Each story has full illustrations and take up 1 for 1 printed pages, just like you would get if you bought the books separately, so children can immensely enjoy Shirley Hughes' lovely illustrations. The book is big, as would be expected for a treasury, but not unwieldy. For those not familiar with Shirley Hughes' stories, Alfie is a young boy (presumably ~3-5 years old?) who, in various stories, has opportunities to express compassion, independence and kindness to his friends, family and neighbors in a variety of lovely real-life experiences. THe books are written with British lingo, like a stroller is a pushcart, Alfie's raincoat is a mac, a leash is a lead, etc. But it is very easy to substitute the words on the fly if this troubles you at all. Children don't mind, and the quality of literature is unparalleled. The Alfie books appeal to children of all ages. My toddler will sit for an hour listening to Alfie stories (unprecedented!), and my 4 and 6 year old love them too. If you buy the Alfie Big Outdoors Storybook, you will not have any redundancies. If you buy the My Alfie Collection: Four Classic Storybooks, you will get a completely redundant set of four books. The Treasury is a much better option with it's large print and illustrations. The Alfie Collection of Four Storybooks is formatted very small (My Alfie Collection: Four Classic Storybooks). FOr introducing your toddler to Alfie or coping with siblings, I highly recommend Annie Rose Is My Little Sister. This book has less text on each page and talks about Alfie's younger sister, Annie Rose, who is probably 1. Also, Alfie's World is a nice companion to the Alfie Treasury, and again has a lot on each page for younger children to use as a stepping stone to other Alfie stories. Alfie's World has over 18 subsections, providing a lot of reading and illustrated on every page. A true diamond in the rough, this homeschooling household is ecstatic to have discovered Shirley Hughes!Product details

The Alfie Treasury Shirley Hughes 9780370332444 Books Reviews
This is an anthology of seven Alfie stories that show the incremental growth and development of a little boy between four and five years. It reinforces all the right attributes and includes charming illustrations. It is a picture book, with detailed illustrations on every page to keep attention. However, there is well-developed plot, too. It is well worth the $20 I paid, including shipping from the United Kingdom.
My 3 year old loves this book!
Perfect book for a preschooler. The problems Alfie faces are exactly the issues every preschool can relate to.
bought in anticipation of grandchild to read this too. loved for our kids looking forward to introducing "alfie" to our grandchild
If you love Alfie stories, this is the collection to get! Includes seven favorite stories with all (I believe) of the original, full color illustrations in a large format. These are great read-alouds for your little ones that describe everyday events through the eyes of a child. Lovely book!
It is hard to get enough of Alfie and Annie Rose. I came across Shirley Hughes books 20 years ago in the library. My children loved them. Now that I am a grandmother, I am buying them for our home library. My first grandchild is 6 mos old, so not much interest yet. My daughter babysits for children ranging in age from 2 -7. She read them our old copy of An Evening at Alfie's, they loved it. My daughter gave a copy of The Alfie Treasury to the 4 year old boy she sits for, on his birthday, he and his siblings immediately sat down and wanted her to read at least the first 3 or 4 stories at once. These stories show family life at its best. mom and dad have challenges, the frustration easily written on their expressions at times. Alfie loves his little sister Annie Rose. The family unit is important. Acting kindly develops friendships. While this is a very traditional family, Dad works, Mum stays home, they live in a multicultural neighborhood, and have Asian, Indian and Black friends. Don't look for diverse lifestyles here though.
